Do you find yourself strongly relating to this after marriage? Did you ever wonder why people gain weight all of a sudden the moment they finally tie the knot? Do you ever find yourself threatened and haunted by this thought after you find the man/woman of your dreams?

We often tell ourselves that there is no way on earth that we’ll gain weight so easily after marriage as it happens to most people! Ironically, we all know what comes after! Let’s not become overly confident in ourselves and face the facts; we all trip over this dilemma no matter who we are. Gradually and subconsciously, we completely lose control and we find ourselves bewildered by the abrupt appearance of those love-handles in the mirror! Let's not get started on the muffin tops! It’s either we contain the situation before it seriously gets out of control or we don’t!

What couples had to say about gaining weight after marriage

We asked 10 different people, ages 25-40, about their personal experiences with the scale after marriage. The results did, in fact, confirm that 90% of people do gain weight after they get married. However, the good news is that 60% did manage to lose part or all of the gained weight again. Moreover, one of the ten people miraculously managed to actually lose, and not gain, weight after marriage. On the other hand, there are those who constantly struggle to manage their diet and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Reasons for weight gain:

The truth is that most people do gain weight right after marriage for very common and relatable reasons. Some people simply view food as an absolute pleasure, in other words, they live to eat. And with being in love and a wedding that is just around the corner, we find ourselves slowly addicted to this euphoric state. Hence, we eat to enjoy ourselves even more.

Dawlat, 31, passionately explains these phenomena saying “Beginnings are always beautiful, and the joy we find ourselves experiencing doesn’t only open up our hearts but also increases our appetites. I love cooking and we both love food. I found myself wanting to cook him nice things all the time because the way I see it, cooking for someone is a way of expressing love and care”.

There is no doubt that we all have a strong motive to shape up before our wedding. Honestly speaking, we all want to impress the other with our newly carved, smoking hot bodies. Once we establish a sense of security within the relationship, we go back to our old habits. All the effort put in earning that body is wasted and the sweat we shed evaporates in a glimpse of an eye. Wael -40- further articulates sarcastically, yet in a serious manner “The attempts to shape-up to impress her before the wedding are now useless; it’s done…she has fallen for me”

Alaa -26- explains other reasons for her weight gain “I started to eat more and cook high-calorie recipes because I just love food. My mother always used to cook healthy food for us and that's why I felt like I wanted to try out different things. Not to mention that my husband and I indulge in food. Both of us have now decided to start dieting in order to save what we still can”. We could, of course, say that Alaa’s scenario is quite common amongst newlyweds.

Other reasons for weight gain that are absolutely involuntary are for instance: pregnancy and let’s not forget the scariest reason of all “Estrogen”.

The actual dilemma “the shirts no longer fit”:

When we asked a few people about their issues with weight gain, their answers mainly revolved around one “The clothes don’t fit anymore”. Others expressed experiencing heaviness and discomfort in their movement. Mohamed -28- explains how he really noticed his weight gain as he was playing football “Even one kilogram makes a difference in the easiness of your movement. I started feeling quite heavy when I played football”.

The most astonishing answer we got regarding the issue, was Ayman’s -30- who said jokingly “Before we got married I was 94 k, however now I am 85 k. I lost weight as I started working out more and not because of stress and depression”. On the other hand, Shady -33- who most probably represents most of us, had a different experience “I gained weight because now I work out less than I used to before marriage”.

“Women’s pampering at the beginning of marriage and opening up your appetite”:

Just sitting down together in front of the television set, enjoying a good movie or watching your favorite series, highly increases the chances of binge eating. Potato couching is a practice that cannot be carried out without high-calorie snacking!

Unfortunately, the couch invasion episode isn’t the only reason why couples gain weight after marriage. And for that reason, we need to replace unhealthy or high-calorie snacks with chopped cucumber, carrots, fruits and bowls of popcorn instead. You don’t have to cook up a pan of your mouthwatering Swiss roll or try out your mother’s insanely heartwarming Om Ali recipe every time you decide to enjoy some good quality time together in front of the TV. Remember, there are many other healthier ways to pamper your husband.

Dawlat thinks cooking is another mere expression of love and care: “There are no special occasions happening in the world that don’t involve food. Why are we fussing over it when it comes to love and marriage?!” Not to mention of course the family dinners and the aunts’ pampering, the outings with friends, the delicious desserts, and the endless boxes of chocolates. Enough said, right?!

How to get back on track after this period of dying emotions:

It usually needs a lot of motivation, mental, physical, and psychological effort just to decide to get back on track, let alone lose the actual weight. We face a constant inner struggle between the need for achieving our targets and fighting the outer temptations that surround us and could hinder our plans. We need to train our minds to shut out these temptations and understand that food is not the key to feeling satisfied or fulfilled.

The following inner dialogue is a tiny version of the inner struggle we just mentioned. The dialogue is taken from the answers we got from asking different people about their personal experiences with weight gain after marriage. Read the dialogue and let us know if you happen to encounter the same inner struggles:

●     Decision-making: “It’s because I am not motivated to go on a diet and I never workout. Also, when I get upset, I don’t stop myself from having anything I’m craving”

●     Trial: “I lost a few kilos because I started working out again”

●     Persistence: “I haven’t lost any weight yet, but I am still trying”

●     Focus: “I understood I was going through a serious phase when I started concentrating more”.

●     Consistency: Tthe scale goes up and down,  however, it’s always within the same range: 7 kilos”.

●     Patience: “Not yet. It takes time”.

●     Outcome: “I’m a healthier human being, thank God!”

The most significant part of the whole process is to encourage and motivate each other in order to create a more stable and healthy lifestyle for ourselves and hence, be able to recognize and overcome these phases before it’s too late. Once we initiate this journey, we will start seeing matters from a totally different perspective.
