Wedding Guest Dress Codes Explained!

Large

When you first get an invitation for a wedding there is always the dress code specified on it, and although most people might think it’s pretty self-explanatory, there is always those sayings and words that make things a but blurry or confusing especially if you are trying to figure out what clothes mesh with it.

From black-tie to casual all the way to come as you are there are so many ways to specify the dress codes and so little explanations on what that means when it comes to actually picking the clothes. Which is why we are explaining all the different dress codes in detail below to avoid any further questions or confusions.

Black Tie

The most known and used for traditional and formal weddings. Black tie means you have to come looking your best, very fancy, and wearing proper traditional attire. It also means that the wedding is probably happening in the evening or at night and is formally seated as well. Whether it’s a floor length gown or a fancy cocktail dress the point of black tie is to not come anywhere near a casual look. Men must wear tuxedos and if it’s in the summer they are still expected to show up with a blazer and leather shoes.

Cocktail

Slightly less semiformal and not as uptight as black-tie, cocktail attire is a popular dress code for couples who want their guests to feel more relaxed but still maintain some elegance. Typically is more formal than a day wedding but more casual than a night celebration. Instead of a floor-length dress, women should opt for a tea-length, knee-length, or midi dress. Men are required to wear a suit and tie, regardless of the wedding's setting. Remember to look classy and polished, but don't wear something overly embellished or fancy that you take away from the newlyweds.

Casual

This means the wedding will likely be held outdoors or on the beach. The event will probably be much more laid-back, especially when it comes to attire. With that said, jeans, shorts, and tank tops are still a no go unless they're specifically noted as acceptable. A summer sundress is appropriate (just make sure the fabric isn't overly formal). Wedges or dressy sandals are the perfect footwear for a casual wedding, but sandals and sneakers are not. Wear dress pants or linen pants with a collared shirt. Steer clear of any t-shirts or tennis shoes.
