Wedding Guest Attire... What Not to Wear!

Large

Wedding guest attire is something we don’t usually discuss as much as the bride and groom's attire. It’s quite tricky to abide by a wedding’s dress code and to figure out what would be most suitable to wear. Deciding what to wear is more or less knowing quite well what not to wear to a wedding! A part of deciphering the dress code on that wedding invitation is following the rules of what never to wear as a wedding guest

Naturally, you’ll want to look your best at any wedding you want to attend. That being said, the trick here is to stay away from breaking the rules and looking marvelous at the same time. Some rules are specific and others are rather generic to any type of wedding which are the ones we will talk about in this article. Remember, it’s not enough to use our self-judgment on deciding on what not to wear to a wedding because sometimes we assume that wearing something is ok when in fact it could be really inappropriate.

Take a look at the following 7 things not to wear at a wedding as a guest.

1) White dress:

Now that’s an obvious one. The bride is the queen of the night and she's the one who gets to wear the gorgeous white gown. So unless she specified an all-white dress code for her big day don’t wear anything that could mistake you as the bride. Also, try to avoid light colors such as light pinks, champagne, beige, and off whites because they are very fashionable in bridal gowns nowadays.

2) Denim:

The dress code says semi-formal? That doesn’t mean we go completely astray here and wear denim to a wedding party no matter what the dress code is! Denim is too casual for a wedding reception even if it’s on a beach.

3) Slippers:

Beach wedding in the summer could entice anyone to wear slippers and that’s again a big NO-NO! You could always go for sandals, flats, loafers, moccasins but never flip-flops or slippers.

4) Color of the bridesmaids:

Well, if you’re not too close to the bride it’s very difficult to know what the bridesmaids will wear. However, if you happen to find out try to stay away from picking an outfit of the same color because you don’t want to seem like you’re trying to hard to be a part of the bride’s gang.

5) Anything that outshines the bride:

Now you don’t want to wear something that will put all eyes on you instead of the bride meaning you must avoid outshining the bride at all circumstances. Even if the dress code is formal keep the sparkles to a minimum. Lay low of too bright, shiny, or metallic looks to avoid being in a situation where you’re attracting too much attention and stealing it from the actual bride. Seriously you don’t want to be that wedding guest!

6) Wearing something that is way too sexy:

It’s the same idea don't wear something that makes everyone look at you instead of the bride and also you don't want to look too inappropriate on such a formal occasion.  For sure you’ll want to look your most attractive and there is nothing wrong with showing a bit of skin but still a wedding is no place to wear your shortest or lowest cut look. A big chance the wedding ceremony will take place on the same day in a mosque or a church which means you will need to choose the wedding guest attire accordingly.

7) Black:

It’s with no doubt that black is always a classy and stylish look and it looks great on almost everyone. However, since we live in a very superstitious society wearing black on a wedding day could be either considered as a bad omen or be misinterpreted as rude. So just stay safe of all the talk and spare yourself the hassle and choose another classy color.
