Breakups are a devastating emotional rollercoaster we all have to take a ride on. Getting over a relationship seems impossible until it’s done. The pain, missing your ex and the combined guilt is messy and unbearable. Although it’s hard, you must find the strength to get up everyday and remember your individual goals before you met your partner. Breakups are broken down into stages of grief in which most people fall into immediately after the breakup. From denial to acceptance and happiness, here are the breakup stages you’ll have to face: 

1. Denial 

This very first step is denying and wondering if you can still salvage the relationship. You’ll find yourself fishing for answers and hoping they’ll reach out. This shock phase is normal and takes time to sink in. It’s hard to gasp that your loved one is not around anymore. 

2. Distraction 

As reality sinks in, so does the pain. It’s natural to run away from the discomfort  by distractions like constantly going out or taking a trip to escape mentally. You might even enjoy it a little bit, but the pain can’t be numbed forever. Soon enough the build up emotions will break you down and get the best of you.

3. Anger

After your adrenaline rush of distractions runs out, you start to resent your relationship and parter for your current pain. You might even be angry with yourself and wonder if there was anything you could’ve done to save the relationship. 

4. Depression 

In every breakup, there are dark moments for sadness. The deep agonizing pain can be sometimes physically disabling to many. It’s important to understand that this dark cloud will pass and the sadness will stop. In order to see the sun again, you must push through the pain, everyday! 

5. Acceptance 

This is where the real growth and moving on happens. This is the happiest stage and the main goal of breakups. You’ll genuinely smile now and feel relieved in the breakup, maybe even take some valuable lessons. Waking up everyday won't be painful anymore, and you're ready to take on life again.
