How to Create Your Wedding Playlist

This is the soundtrack to your wedding. Let’s do it justice.

Who could argue that the right music could literally turn a zombie land into freaking Woodstock? There’s a saying that goes something like “Remain where there’s music. Bad people don’t sing”, which is pretty self-explanatory, kids.

Let’s get one thing straight, your playlist either makes or breaks the wedding, and it’s your responsibility to make sure that you don’t ruin the festivities by picking tunes that do not match your crowd’s taste.

Allow us to introduce you to the best way to create the perfect wedding playlist.

1- The Do-Not-Play list:

Before getting down to the fun part, you first need to make a list of any genres or tracks that you don’t want playing at your wedding. It doesn’t have to be long, it just has to include the direction of ambiance that you don’t want to end up with. Don’t leave it all to your DJ, he doesn’t know you, people.

If you leave the matter up to your DJ, they’ll most probably end up playing tracks that you’d rather do without.

2- Breaking down the list:

You need to break down the list into smaller ones. Create a list for each event on your program, dinner music, first dances, father-daughter dance, entrance track, friends list, last song, and so on. Just name the mini-lists first, then add the music and arrange the flow.

3- Collective songs list:

1- We would like to emphasize here on the importance of being bold and being yourself. Add the music that moves you, that you like, that you listen to…have a look at your secret music library, where you keep all your embarrassing songs, guilty pleasures, and the tracks you used to be obsessed with. All of these tunes have contributed to the formation of the person you are today, so be proud of that and get those songs out there.

2- Add some taste to your wedding playlist by creating it with your partner, your best friends, and even your guests. You can create an online event or list for all of your guests to request specific songs. You can even create a poll. It would be even better if you host a “Playlist making” sleepover for your friends where you can listen, dance, and decide all night.

4- Create the Mix:

This is the best and most important part, you need a real mix. The most common mistake that’s repeated in wedding playlists is sticking to a certain kind of music or genre and forgetting to MIX.

Here is what you need on your playlist:

Love and romantic songs (10%)

Dance and popular songs (50%)

Light and classic music (30%)

Your own songs regardless of the genre (10%)

And there is another factor that you need to take into consideration, guests’ ages. Part of being nice is not leaving anyone behind on that day, so try to be flexible when making your list:

50% to match people between 20 and 30 years old.

30% to match guests between 30 and 40 years old.

10% for those between 40 and 50 years old.

10% for the guests over 50.

5- Final touches:

The main final touches here are:

1- The order of the list: Double check on the order of your songs and make sure the order goes with your wedding program and everything. You don’t need your entrance track to be played during the buffet opening.

2- How long will it last?

Usually, you need to make a wedding playlist that goes on for around three hours, but just in case, add an extra hour or two just for safety.
