Before 11 months: How to Determine Your Wedding Budget

To Pay or not to pay?

Large

She said yes and you’re officially engaged to be wed. Love is in the air and everything feels like pure magic. It seems like the hardest part is over, right? Sorry to say that this is only the beginning of a l-o-t of planning that is yet to come. Yep, that’s it, the trick’s always in trying to wing the money part and failing! Don’t threat. Take a deep breath, inhale, and slowly exhale. If there is a will, there is a way. Remember we all survived it, all you need is just a little bit of faith and money management skills and you’ll be all set and ready to get down!

Who will pay for what?

Before planning anything, you both need to have this awkward talk about who is paying for what. It is not really that fun or romantic but it’s hella necessary. Try to come up with an estimated figure for the wedding, based on the financial capabilities of each one of you. After settling on a number, discuss the following points together:

Determine the sources of your budget:

You need to decide on the sources that make your wedding budget. There are basic sources you could depend on, which are: Your bank account, your partner’s bank account, your current job, your parents, and whether or not you have anything saved up for such an occasion, bearing emergencies in mind, of course. Next thing you need to determine is the amount of cash you can put aside from your salaries each month. Lastly, check if your parents are willing to help out.

The good part:

What is your idea of a good wedding? How do you imagine it? You need to make a list, first of all, and write down the things you want for your wedding, starting from the food to how many people you want there. After you finish your list, divide it into three smaller ones: The essentials, the definitely-worth-considering, and the can-live-without.

Estimate away:

Place an estimated number next to each item on each list and add the total of the whole list. You should have a  number for each list and another total of the three of them combined. Compare these numbers to your estimated wedding budget. After comparing, you will get a clearer picture of the things you need and the things you can let go of.

Track your budget:

There are numerous details to think about for your wedding and to pay for. Without tracking how much you’re spending, your budget will positively crash! Have your money ready, but before you give it away, use your tracker!

The Venue:

The venue is one of the most important factors that help you decide on your wedding budget! First, the style: the more formal a wedding is, the pricier it will be, simply because you’ll have to match all aspects of that type of wedding, from entertainment, food, flowers and so on to an arrow that only points upwards. Second, the setting: You could have an amazing wedding anywhere; it’s all about your budget, theme, and time of day. Choose your setting according to your estimated budget!

Catering:

Food is another aspect that could cost a ton of money, and for that reason, try to simplify your menu. Your food budget will help you decide on the number of guests, so do your homework and dig for good, affordable caterers.

Determine your guest list:

It depends on the venue and, for sure, the budget. Don’t invite people if the place is too small to accommodate them. Divide the guest list between the two of you and try to come up with a number that is both suitable for the venue and the cash you have.
