7 Lessons on Dealing with Your Wife’s Menstrual Cycle

Large

We’ve all heard of the infamous period, which takes place before a woman's menstrual cycle. PMS stands for Premenstrual Syndrome, which we could describe as a period (pun intended) of endless emotions and physical distress that every woman has to go through every month. To be more precise, it’s better described as a period of physical, psychological, and emotional turbulence, in addition to the pain women have to endure each month for 5-14 days, depending on their cycle.

The severity and symptoms of PMS vary from each and every woman and from one month to another. As a man, you need to realize the importance of being aware of the changes that happen to your partner each month, in order to make both of your lives much easier. At first, you will find yourself quite perplexed by certain actions and unexplained mood fluctuations.

The first thing you need to understand is that women really do go through quite a difficult time before and during their periods. It’s not an easy thing to endure and it is definitely not an act. Never insinuate that it is! Or you’ll find yourself caught in the middle of an argument that you cannot win. Secondly, not all women experience PMS in the same way and for that reason, you have to be patient and observant of your partner’s needs at that time. In this article, we will try to give you a few hints to aid you on your mission.

1. Pamper her:

Pamper your wife over and over again. Emotionally, she needs to feel loved and cared for. Remember that she would most probably take most comments a little more sensitively than usual, so don’t forget to compliment her on how she looks or what she wears, you name it! Be attentive to her needs, if she is tired, fix her something to drink or a hot bath to relax. Try to be sweet and avoid getting into arguments that could wait.

2. Help with household chores:

Remember that “the” time of the month is usually physically draining and sometimes very exhausting. Try to detect when she needs physical help with anything and always take the initiative to assist in household chores, especially during these dark times. She will feel that you genuinely care for her wellbeing both physically and emotionally.

3. Don’t take it personally when she gets angry over trivial matters:

Yes, you will find extremely erratic mood swings taking place, the type that that would probably drive anyone insane, even her own self. But hang in there and try to be as patient and as understanding as you can be. If she gets angry over trivial matters or if you find her being too sensitive and cranky, try to understand that it is not personal in any way. She is just going through an emotionally and physically exhausting phase. Let her take everything out,  and she will snap out of it sooner than you think. One moment, she could be angry as hell about something that could seem so undeserving to you, and the next she could be cuddling up to you and asking you to hold her.

4. Romance:

Try to be as romantic and as caring as you can be because this is your chance to revive the passion in your relationship. Not only will she be receptive to your genuine gestures, but also very appreciative of them, as well. You don’t need to go grandeur on this one. Simply planning out a movie night together at home, or preparing a nice meal would do it.

5. Small gifts are always a win:

Don’t freak out, please. We are not telling you to keep a monthly budget to get her a gift every time your wife is PMSing. At least, not in that specific sense. Remember, gifts vary from the smallest gestures to the grandest ones; the diamond earrings she always wanted are among the latter obviously. You could try to buy her food that could, at the same time elevate her mood like chocolate. You could also take her out on a nice date to her favorite restaurant.

6. Track her period:

A good tip is obviously to track her period. When you are aware of her time of the month, things will become a bit easier for you and you’ll eventually grow to understand your partner’s physical and psychological monthly changes and needs better.

7. Complement her/ make her feel good about herself:

A very specific and perhaps surprising detail that you need to know is that women usually feel quite unattractive during their cycle. It is a reflection of how they feel inside. They feel bloated, the scale goes up, they feel tired and hence, they look tired, zits start popping on their faces, and I could go on forever.

The fact is that all of these details are only spotted and felt by the women who are going through periods themselves. Most times, men don’t pay attention to such details, and if they do, they aren’t able to relate them to PMS. All you need to do is be sensitive to this fact and actually try to make her feel good about herself. Use your talents to pamper her.

We know all this must seem overwhelming at first, especially when you’re in the situation and when you’re in dire need to learn to deal with it. Accepting the responsibility you have, which is to learn to give your partner what she needs is a very good start. The rest will become plain and simple once you get the hang of it. Talk to your wife and ask her what she needs and don’t just blindly follow the tips in our article. You must understand that after all, these aren’t but a bunch of tips that definitely aren’t set in stone. Women are different and hence, their needs also differ. Keep that in mind, always.
